While some might not be able to recognize one right away, shingle roofing is something you’ve most likely seen at least once a day. As the most common roofing material in the United States, these rectangular shapes are found on countless homes and houses just about everywhere. For those who might not be in the know, shingles are asphalt tiles that cover a roof installation. And today, we’re going to give you four facts that you might not be familiar with.

Popular and Versatile
The popularity of asphalt shingles can be traced all the way back to the early 1900s. Back then, the style option was quite limited as they only came in two colors; black and green. Luckily, there are more options available. Shingles are available in many colors and shapes that mimic slate, stone, and even wood. Progress is wonderful, isn’t it?
Two Types
Asphalt shingles, despite having multiple colors and designs, are separated into two groups. These are known as 3-tab and architectural. 3-tab shingles tend to be more affordable than architectural ones, and have the appearance of three separate shingles, though they’re only one piece. Architectural shingles are more versatile and have a tendency to last longer.
Asphalt Shingles are Lightweight
One of the most important aspects of any roof is weight. A heavy roof tends to be hazardous. Not every home is formulated to support heavy building materials such as clay or slate. Luckily, asphalt shingles work with almost any home because they’re considerably lighter and easier to work with.
Cost-Effective
Shingles are built by manufacturers in bulk, which means acquiring a sizable inventory is relatively inexpensive. Because they’re easier to work with, they can be installed much quicker, significantly cutting labor costs. If properly installed, a roof assembled with shingles can last anywhere from ten to thirty years. Studies have also shown that asphalt shingles tend to be more durable than some of the other available roofing materials.
